The trial of the Rev. Isaac Xalloch, Mayor of San Francisco, for shooting at Charles De Young, is now in its 37th day. The testimony is conflicting.
A French man o'-war will be sent to Chinese waters, and a war vessel despatched to watch the Tahiti Islands.
The Hawaiian Islands are beiug devastated by small p x, recently imported in the brig Cassandra, from Canton. The white inhabitants are flying in dismay, although all the roads and paths leading out of Honolulu are closely guarded: The mail steamers will not take anything on board except mails, remaining outside the reef to receive them. Mongolians are arriving in large numbers, and appropriating the native women. The affairs of the islands are far from satisfactory.

It is thought the Union Pacific (overland) Railway will go on the London market for the loan of £40,000,000 with which to pay the U.S. Government the whole sum due to it.

The international " tramp" in Ne.w York came to an end on March I2fcn. O'Leary retired with 450 miles ; later on Vaughan withdrew, after completing 461 miles. The affair was almost neglected by the public.
Cholera is raging in Chicago, which is attributed to ttie general use of butterine or olitomargerine.'
On his return from England, Edward Hanlau, champion oarsman, was the guest of the Atlanta Boat Club, Few York. On March 30 a dinner was given in his honor, at which Mayor Grace, the Rev. Henry Ward Beecher, and other distin-. guished persons were present. John W. Mackay, the Bonanza prince, has made a bid for the collection of pictures belonging to Prince Forfconia, in Home.
A mass meeting in sympathy with the Boers was held in Chicago. There are nine thousand Dutchmen in this city.
The policy of educating young Indians instead of fighting old ones, is now proposed by the United States Government. A case of poisoning from eating canned salmoa occurred in Chicago, ending fatally. Corrosion of the can was the cause of the poisoning. Fred Douglas, a coloured man, and well known as a speaker, is spoken of for Minister to Brazil.
The world's fair, to be held in New York in 1883, will probably be abandoned as no subscriptions are coming in.
