NEW PLYMOUTH RACES.

During the first day the weather was gloomy, but the attendance was large. Maiden Plate, 1\ miles—Venture, Bst 21bs, 1; Frivolity, Bst, 2; Sunray, 9st 31bs, 3. Six started. There were 52 subscribers in the totalisatsr, and 10 on the winner; The race was won easily by a length, the same distance between the second and third. The field in the cluster two lengths behind the third. Time, 2mins. 52secs. Handicap Steeplechase, 3 miles—Mclvor's Chandler, 1; Eikorangi, 9st slbs, 2; Lady Grey, 9st 41bs, 3. There were 138 in the totalisator, and 45 on the winner. Seven started. Matau was scratched. Catch'em fell at the double jump opposite the stand. The whole baulked at the furze hedge. On entering the straight Lady Grey and Eikorangi mistook the course, and had to be pulled, but started again in thp pursuit of Chandler, who, however, won by twenty lengths. Jockey Club Handicap, 2 miles —•Matau, 6st 91bs, I; Libeller, Bst 121bs, 2; Dan, Bst, 3. Mr Walters.declared to win with Libeller. There were 199 in the totalisator, 27 on the winner. On coming down the hill Libeller mads a grand effort, and ran through the field like lightning, but could not get upon terms with Matau, who won by a length. Time, 3mins 34secs. Taranaki Cup, 2 miles—Libeller, 9st, 1; Hailstorm, 9st 4ibs, 2; Endymion, 9st 41bs, 3. There were 294 subscribers in the totalisator, and 103 on the winner. At the end of a mile and a-half Libeller was called on, and responded brilliantly. An exciting race ensued between him and Hailstorm, and after a neck-&nd-neck race, Libeller won by a length.
