THIS DAY.
(Before H. Eenrick, Esq., R.M.) DBUNK AND DISORDERLY.
W. Latham was charged with this offence.
John Gregory deposed he resided in Richmond street, and at an early hour this morning he was disturbed by some persons calling out to him to open the door. Me did so, and accused and another man caught hold of him and used him very roughly—pulling him about, striking him, and kicking him. He told them when they let him go that he would inform the police, upon which they attempted to strike him again. He got into the house. The accused tried each of the windows to get in, and effected an entrance by the front window, upon which witness left by the back door, and went for the police. Upon returning with a constable, the accused was found lying in the garden. Accused said, in reply to a question from the Magistrate, that he did not remember anything about the matter. His Worship inflicted a flue of £2, or one week's imprisonment. ANOTHEE CHABGE. W. Latham was further charged with assault. The same evidence was taken as in the last case. His Worship said such conduct would have to be put down. Many men supposed that they could commit all sorts of offences just because they were drunk. Such cases were becoming too frequent, and must be put a stop to. He would sentence the prisoner to one month's imprisonment with hard labor in Mount Eden, the last sentence to run concurrently. .
