Completion of the 9-inch Mains to Shortland.

GEAND PYEOTECHNIC DISPLAY.

For a long time one of the principal desires of the good people of Shortland was the extension of the 9 inch mains down Pollen street, in place of the small used up 4-inch pipes on which they had to depend in case of a conflagration. The Shortland Fire Brigade have, time after time, combatted with fires, the miserably small force of water at disposal placing them at a serious disadvantage, and making it almost impossible to get a fire under when once it had a fair hold. Some weeks ago the extension of the large mains to Shortland was completed, and the Brigade determined to celebrate the event in a fitting manner. Accordingly they gave a grand pyrotechnic display at Butt's Corner last evening, in the presence of about 1000 people. Fantastin jets of water were thrown in feathery streams, and then illuminated with coloured fire; rockets and other fireworks kept up a constant fusilade, and the effect was quite entrancing. The Scottish Band played a number of selections during the display. The whole affair was most creditably conducted, and was greatly appreciated by the sightseers.
