(To the Editor of the Evening Star.)
Sic, —With your permission I cannot allow the remarks of Capt. Wildraan, as reporter in your contemporary of yesterday's date (Monday) to pass without notice. If that is his definition of meanness, and the extent of his knowledge as regards the value of different public opinions he should never let them again appear in public print. Where and from, whom did the distinct promise eminate. If I am correctly informed it was at the select officers' mess during the time the bone and sinew of the Volunteers was patroliuu the streets of Grahamstovni, their commanders boosing away and determining when and where they should muster their forces for another spree, and I will also remind Capt. Wildman that the Waikato cavalry had 15s per day from the time they left until they returned, but of course we are so full of loyalty and so we are asked to pay our own piper. If the Government want our services out of the district let us be paid also, and thus do away with: the hardships which I do maintain is inflicted both on the families of volunteers and business people, and perhaps then it would lead to the appointment of a permanent Rifle Commodore on the staff. As to the long theatrical article which also appears, we all know the author, and as usual it has been put in to fill in space as the editor himself is too much annoyed afe present to prepare matter. —Yours &c, Quick Step.
