Mining Review of the Week.
The absence of speculative feeling has been demonstrated during the past week in the case of the stock of the Old Golden Calf—a mine whose prospects have wonderfully improved of late. At other times the " show" in this claim would have caused what our American friends style " a boom." There is a firstclass chance of a shot of gold being got in the big block now opened up, and the stuff now taken out should remunerate handsomely. There was a slight spurt in Caledonians yesterday. The operations in this mine are looked on with great interest just now, the present manager, Mr Thomas B. Hicks, being a thoroughly practical, and withall, a lucky miner. The owners of batteries and those who have stuff ready to crush are growling at the scarcity of water, whereby much valuable time is being lost. To our minds it is apparent that the water race as it at present stands is inadequate to supply the demands upon it during the summer months, though of course, in winter there is a sufficiency. At the last meeting of the Thames County County the Engineer brought up a report of the cost of bringing the Hihi creek into the race. We trust that the County Council will see the advisability of increasing the etficieney of the water race, both as a means of meeting the wants of the public and increasing their own revenue.
The proprietors of mines benefitted by the operations of the Big Pump are causing general dissatisfaction by their neglect to prospect the deep levels. Rumour has it that at least one of the local bodies is prepared to kick over the traces unless something is done in the direction indicated.
