Our Wairoa Friends.

This afternoon the steamer Planet put in an appearance with a number of visitors from the Wairoa, some 15 of whom intend to try conclusions with a local of riflemen. This visit has been looked forward to with interest by many, who have bad the pleasure of knowing the settlers of the Wairoa valley, but more especially by those gentlemen, who, on a late occasion visited that flourishing settlement and received so much kindness and attention from the inhabitants. The steamer was a little late on the tide and had to land her passengers at Tararu, but our reception committee had cabs in waiting, and the visitors were immediately driven into town. Major Murray, Mr D. Cloonan (th indefatigable secretary to the committee), His Wor ship the Mayor, and a number of other gentlemen met the Wairoans at Tararu and welcomed them to the Thames. During the afternoon the sites of the place were shown to the visitors, and steps will be taken to make their visit aa enjoyable as possible. The following are the names of the gentlemen who will take part in the rifle match, Lieut. Crawford in command : Crawford, Moore, Joseph Creighton, John Creightou, Frank Creighton, Christopher Creighton, John Smith, Tattersall, T. Wallace, John Wallace, H. Welch, E. Wilson, F. Wilson, Coutts, McCormick, G. Wilson emergency man.

The Thames team will be chosen from the following:—Messrs Murray, Schofield, Brownlow, Heron, Brownlee, Downie, Weir, Lawlor, Buttle, Price, White, J. S. Clarke, Smith, Turtle, Fenton, Brown, and McLean.

Captain Payne, the well known captain of the Auckland Artillery, and Captain Wildman, of the Navals, will act as umpires.
