Racing Notes.
The Autumn Meeting of the Thames Jockey Club Bacescomes off at Parawai on Thursday next. The programme • promises to be particularly interesting. Local owners are busy "licking" their steeds into "form," and 'morning gallops and jumping exercises are now the order of the day. Judging by the spirited manner in which several of the candidates negotiate their "timbers," the hurdle race bids fair to be an exciting and well contested|affair. The "coming strangers" have not yet put in an appearance. The Waikato and Ohinemuri contingent are said to be on . their way overland, while Batcatcher and Golden-Crown may be expected by first steamer. The latter is honored with being made first favorite for the big event—the Hibernian Cup—owing to the leniency with which he has been treated - by the handicapper, but, notwithstanding ' this, several of the other competitors have also their confident supporters, and the 1 great is likely to remain a debat- "' able' question until some five minutes after the eventful moment on which Mr - Townsend drops his flag, and then—we : shall see.
