THE Evening Star. PUBLISHED DAILY AT FOUR O'CLOCK P.M. Resurrexi. MONDAY, MARCH 14, 1881.

In another column appears a cablegram giving- the startling intelligence that the Czar of Russia has been murdered by the explosion of a bomb. No details were to hand as we' went to press, but from the many attempts that have of late been made by his discontented subjects upon the life of this unfortunate ruler of all the Russias, we may safely infer that this last and successful one has been the work of the Nihilists. Since the late Turkish War Alexander 11. has lost the confidence and respect of his subjects, and although a liberal ruler when compared with his predecessors, he was not always pi'epared to grant the growing demands of his subjects for liberty. He did good service to his country, the emancipation of the serfs alone being sufficient to make his name remembered ; yet he has fallen by the hand of the assassin, like many of his race.
