CRICKET.

Auckland v. Thames.

We append the remainder of our report of the above cricket match :—•

Euns came slowly for some time, and nothing but singles eventuated; Certes was bowled next off a ball well delivered by Lawless. Lankham (senr.) followed, and was caught by Gray off Lawless's first ball. The score now stood 49 runs for three wickets. C. MacOormick replaced Lankham senior. Stafford went on to bowl in place of Spencer. Lawless bowled a wide. Singles followed. MacCormick soon broke his egg. Spencer here went on again in place of Lawless. Mumford made a fine hit into the corner for three off Stafford, and followed this up by another for five. Spencer bowled a wide. MacCormick drove Spencer for three. Mumford followed with a like number. Lawless here replaced Stafford with the leather. MacCormick made a neat cut for three off Lawless. Mumford drove the same bowler for a couple, and again made a neat three to a part of the field unguarded, and indeed no one seemed inclined to go after the bail until Gray fielded it. The fielding caused very unfavourable comment. Webber again took the ball. Euns came slowly. Mumford drove Lawless to squareleg for four, and followed it up with a drive to long-on for a like number. Mumford again drove Lawless to long-off for three. At this time (12.30) the visitors had obtained 127 runs for three wickets. At this point Mumford was caught out by the bowler (Stafford), after contributing 61 to the score, being fine play. The score now stood 127 runs for four wickets. MacCormick was next bowled by Stafford, having made 18 runs —127 runs for five wickets. Porch and Lankham, junr., then faced the bowling of Stafford and Spencer, and Stafford bowled a maiden over. Lankham made 4 off Spencer to long-leg. Stafford again bowled a maiden over, and runs came very slowly, Lankham, however, making two off Spencer. Lankham slipped Stafford Tor two, but was given out lbw, bowled ■ Stafford. He contributed nine by careful play. Grey here took the ball from Spencer, and the change had effect, MacCormick having his walking ticket, being well bowled. The score here stood 142 for seven wickets. Gray then bowled a maiden. F. Porch obtained a fine leg hit for three off Stafford. At this point N. Porch was well caught by Lawless off Grey. The score now stood 155 for 8 wickets. F. Porch made a drive for three off Gray, and West broke his duck egg with a couple. He slipped Grey soon after for two. Porch was nicely caught at this poiut off Gray, by Lawless. The score now stood 172 for 9 wi'kets. Whitaker went in and put Stafford away for three, and West put Stafford to leg for two. In the next over West, the substitute, was caught by Burgess for a well earned nine. The innings of the visitors then closed for 176, of which 32 were byes.

Burgess after making one run was clean bowled by Lankham : two runs for one wicket; Spencer joined Lawless, and runs came slowly. Lawless made a fine three off Lankham, senr., and then made a splendid five hit off young Lankham. Lawless cut Lankham, senr., for three. Singles came slowly. Spencer got three off Lankham, junr., who however, bowled a maiden over subsequently. Spencer got three off Lankham, senr. Lawless cut Lankham, senior, for one. Spencer made a single. Lankham, junior, again bowled a maiden. Lawless was bowled by Lankham, senior, in the next over, having made 15. The score now stood 24 for two wickets. Stafford followed. Several unproductive balls followed. Spencer made four off Lankham, junior. Stafford slipped two and made a siugle; he was caught by Lankham, junior. 34 runs for three wickets. J. Gray followed. Spencer followed with a two. and a four, but was bowled by Lankham, senr., after making 19 runs. The scores were now 38 for three wickets. Weston joined Gray. Weston obtained four off Lankham junior—a good hit. Gray got one off Lankham senior. Weston followed with a single. Weston hit Lankham jnnior for one. Gray was shortly after bowled by Lankham senior, having made two. The score now stool 49 for five wickets. W. Gray foliowea his brother. Weston made a single. Weston ma.de two off Lankham senior. Gray hit Lankham junior for three. Singles followed. Weston was given out lbw, but there are grave doubts as to whether he was really out, and there is a suspicion that the feelings of the Umpire I were biassed in favor of the Auckland men. Weston made 11. The scores were 60 for sic wickets. Battle followed, but was bowled first ball by Lankham senior. Turner followed, but met with the same fate. Webber followed, but was stumped after a brief sojourn at the wicket. Score, 65 for 9. Gray was bowled directly after. The innings .closed for 66.
