In a murder trial in the States United a witness is (jiving his testimony as to the hour of arrival and departure of steamers on which the criminal is believed to have travelled. " Your honor," asks one of the jurors, "I desire to ask the witness some questions." " Very well," says the Judge ; " proceed sir." "At what time did you say the beat left Chicago for Milwaukee ?" "At 7 o'clock in the evening." "Sharp? .Remember you are on your oath now." " feharp!" " And yon have supper on board ? " "Yes sir." "J s it—by virtue of the oath you have just taken —a good, square meal?" " Well, it is pretty lair as far as meals g0."':..: ■;• ' ;, . "No evasive answer, sir. Your Honor I desire that the witness be instructed to reply to ray questions in a positive and straightforward manner." •.;: "But," says ,the Court, " while I have every desire to aid in eliciting the truth I do not precisely see what bearing the questions you have asked have- ——-.' "It is, very important that I should ascertain the truth on this subject, your Honor," says the juror.
. "Why?" - ■" Because I am going to Chicago myselt next week, and I think of taking a return ticket by lake."
