THE NELSON RIFLE MEETING.

Nelson, Last night. Hatch 2To. 12—North v. South

—Carbines. 200, 400, and 500 yards. Seven shots at each distance. Open only to the ten highest aggregate scores belonging to each Island, in Matches Nos. 3, 5, 7, and 10, who shall produce certificates of efficiency for the Volunteer year ending 31st December, 1880. Carbines, same as used in those matches. Entrance, 10s. per man. In the event of a tie in the aggregate scores, both sides will fire shot for shot at 500 yards. Each member of the winning team will receive a silver and gold medal-. A money prize of £2 10s will be given to the highest scorer in the winning team ; and the highest scorer on the losing side will receive a money prize of £2 10s.

This Match was fired this morning, but the telegraph office at the camp being closed yesterday, particulars could not be telegraphed before... The North Island Carbine team was composed of H. Dixon, of Wellington Navals, who made the highest score with 76; Armstrong, Thames, second, with 74; Thomas, Thames, third, 74 ; Davy, Wellington, fourth, 71; C. France, Wellington, fifth, 70. The other members of the team were—Cameron, Thames ; A. Dixon, Wellington; McLean, Wanganui; F. France, Wellington ; Gordon, Thames.

In the Consolation Match only three prizes were awarded —£5 given by the Association, and three-fourths of the entry money were divided between the second and third men. Sharland, of Nelson, took the first prize of £5 ; Wilson, second, £2; and Marshall, Otago, third, £1 9s 4d.

The prizes were distributed this afternoon by Mrs Suter, wife of the Bishop of Nelson. Major Baillie stated that over £650 had been distributed in prize money by the Association. He spoke in satisfactory terms of the meeting, and especially referred to the prize of plate and money given by Nelson citizens, which, he said, were of greater value than any previous special prizes. The Southern men leave on Friday.
