New Zealand need not despair of her debt. !NVw York city alone has a debt of £27,000,000, which rpquires a tax of £1,680,000 to pay the interest,. This exceeds the burden on New Zealand, and we will back the vitality of New Zealand against i\ew York.

On Saturday afternoon the boys of the High School (wi»h Mr James) played a friendly cricket match with 10 boys of the Kauaeranga School (with Mr Grerring). The former winning the toss, put in their antagonists, who in Hi tie over an hour put 91 runs together. Mr Muir's team then handled the willow, making 28 ir\ the first innings. They therefore went to the wickets again, and were oil disposed of for 22. The Kauaeranga thus won by 41 runs and an innings. Adams' bowling on the part of the High School was very good, as he took nearly all his opponents' wickets, and J. Greenville, for the Boys' School, who is really a superior bowler, was almost, eqiihlly successful. The rival teaii^s parted with the utmost good feeling.
The estimate of the marker, Mr W. JET. Potts, bei'g rnu-h lower than any of the tenders for moving the Government Rifle range to the Collar one Spur, be has been requested to d > the =cork. The new range will be convenient to tbe great, bulk of our volunteers, and we truat that it will conduce to a higher pitch of 'excellence being gained by our local shootists.
One of the pleasantest country hotels in the province is the Te Aroha Hol;i, owned by the genial Edwin Missen. It is a large two storey building containing about 30 room-, and the furnishing is of the njost tasteful description. To those de-iring a few weeks rest from the worry of business, we cp,n recommend no boiter reßort than Missen's Hotel, amidst the majestic *ceuery of the Upper Thames District.
We would again remind defaulting Borough ratepayers that summonses wilt be delivered to the Clerk of the Court on Saturday next unless the amounts due are peid. The managor of the Kuranui Hill mine invites tenders for several tribute sections in that mine. The case brought by Mr Moore against his niece, in the ft M. Court this morning, ex'-ite t co siderable urifavou* able comment, among f,oe habitues of the court., and t'\eir.disapproval of his laying such a damaging; and unfounded charge agains , his own flesh and blood, wus demonstrated in various way , anathemas, epithets, and other uncomplimentary terms being applied to the complainant in the case. It was entirely a family aff.ir and it would have -bean much more satisfactory to all conoerned had it never come under tho notice of the .Resident Magistrate. ■ -Such trumpery cases are unfortunately of too frequent occurence, and it is a pity that domestic squabbles cannot be arranged without the interference of the court.
A IiHG-E and interested auditory attended the Baptist church last evening, when 20 or 30 persons vve/e baptised according to the formula of tae Btpti^t denooaiuati m. The Rev. T. L. Daviea, Mrs Hampton, and Mr Hemus assisted at the service.
A Pewful of huihrnen in the primitive garments of ti;e forest wits one of the peculiarities at a recer.fc Revival service. When the elder came round to take up the collection the man of the woods who occupied the end of the. seat .threw h«lf a crown into the pkte, exclaiming sotto vooe, " Say boss, this Ml do for the crowd." The features of even the sad looking elder relaxed into a grin.
Otra Auckland evening und Thames morning contemporaries are evidently at sea regarding the ' orthography of tht» name of the mythical dog which guards the gates of Hades. The Star disguises his identity under the word Cerebus, and the 'Tizer improves on it by shoving in en extraneous •' r."
In a paragraph from the correspondent of the Advertiser, dated Mor?antown, Saturday, it is stated that, the office at Morgantov/n will in future be open for four days in each alternate week, namely, from Tuesday to Friday ; also, that "Mr Burgess will attend with the Ji.M,, and Mr Allom baa been appointed Mr Burgess's assistant at Gbahamstown, to enable him, to leave his office and come to Te Aroha alternate weeks." We b&vo made inquiries on this subject, and find that this statement ia untruthful. We Bhould imagine it must also be offensive to one of the officers to whom it refers, upon whom devolves the whole work of the Goldfield Dopartment, in addition to his own, when Mr Burgess is away at Ohinemuri and Te Aroha. On reference to the G-azette of 10th February last, it will be seen that " Albert' James Allom, Esq.," bus been authorised by the Governor "to act as Receiver of Gold Revenue and Mining Registrar at Grahamstown during the absence of Mr F. J. Burgess at Ohinemuri and Aroha," and if we are not misinformed he huß been specially requested to do so, when required, by the Minister of Min9s.
