MES HAMPSON'S DOCTRINE.

(To the Editor of the Evening Star.)

Sic, —Owing to my absence from the Thames at the time of the previous visit of Mrs Hampson, I had not an opportunity of hearing and judging the doctrines she preached. I have, however, heard from several gentlemen (whose veracity I could not think of doubting) that in the peroration of one of her most eloquent discourses she made use of language something similar, although the words may not be exactly the same, to the following :—" If you refuse to accept the message which I have given you tonight, and after I am gone away you persist in closing your hearts against Jesus Christ, / will hear witness against you in the Day of Judgment, and help Him to bar the door of salvation against you." Now, sir, I will not express any opinion on language like this ; it would necessitate my using some strong adjectives if I attempted to do so. I would merely like to know if Mrs Hampson really meant what she is reported to have said, or if it was only used in a " Pickwickian sense." If she did not use the language attributed to her, I think it would be wise if she took an early opportunity of denying it, as now it gives sceptics another opportunity of ridiculing religion, makes doubly dark some who are "almost persuaded," and undoubtedly causes pain to many earnest religious people.—l am, &c, Catholictjs.
