PATEA.

Yesterday.

A few minutes before 12 last night a fire broke out on the premises of Skeldy and Co., drapers. The cause is believed to be the explosion of a kerosene lamp in a bedroom. The shop was a large onestorey building and contained a considerable stock of drapery. The flames spread so rapidly that in less than an hour everything was completely destroyed except the books, which were saved with great difficulty. The stock was insured for £500, that sum being greatly under the actual value. The building was luckily isolated otherwise the loss of property would have been very serious.
