CHRISTCHURCH.
This day. Theophilua V. Whitmore, late Secretary of Working Men's Club, was arrested to-day on a charge of embezzling various sums of money. At the general meeting of the Club a few days ago the defalcations were reported as amounting to £71.
A fire occurred on Saturday on the Hesterton run in the Ellesmere dmiriofc, which destroyed a straw stack, some twenty acres of wheat in. sfcoelt,- about sixty acres of grass and some miles of fencing. In the grass paddock was ; a.nsob
of sheep, and several were severely burnt • It is supposed to be the act of an incendiary. Last year the owners of the same run had five stacks of wheat burned under suspicious circumstances-.
