When George Nathanial Brassey was contesting the Mayoraiy election with the man who wields the destinies of the Advertiser, he was very desirous of obtaining the support of a certain Brown street chemist. The latter was a man who did uot believe in the canvassing system, so George N. didn't know how to get at him. One day his committee chaffed him into interviewing Mr D.

Eat tat, tat on the counter, and Mr D. appeared smiling complacently. " Good morning, Mr D." said George, who everyone knew was aboutl to be married, " I've come to talk about coming events. >s Mr D. either didn't or wouldn't understand what his friend was driving at; at any rate, he placed on the counter a sucking bottle, one of those little puff boxes, a packet of violet powder, aud a tiny sponge, saying " Seven and sixpence. How will that meet coming events."

George smole a sickly legal smile, but couldn't find it in his heart to make any further effort to secure that vote. He remembered he had a client waiting and left.
