MOTUEKA.

This day

Post-sessional Address

Mr Hursthouse addressed the electors here last night. He looked upon the idea of repudiation with utter scorn, and commenting on the way loans had been expended said all must contribute alike to meet the liabilities, notwithstanding they have not had a fair amount of expenditure. He was against borrowing in the future in the same way as in the past. He spoke strongly against the way in which Ministers were advised. They should be selected on account of ability, not solely because they come from Otago, Auckland, and Canterbury, and he spoke somewhat strongly against the large expenditure in favor of Taranaki. He regretted the resignation of Mr Bryce, which he attributed to that gentleman being unable to carry his views in the Ministry—that Hiroki should be arrested. He spoke against the payment of members in the Upper House, and said it might be advantageous to abolish payment of meiiiibers altogether, and for electorates desiring to return poor men to provide the expenses themselves. He received a unanimous vote of confidence.
