This day.
The steamer Charles Edward, in coming from Greymouth struck on a sunken rock off the steeples and knocked a hole iia her bottom. She steamed ahead, but the water rose in the engine room. She then anchored. There was an impenetrable fog at the time. As soon as the acoident happened guns were fired. These were heard in Westport, but nothing practicable was done. The Grafton from Greymouth was seen by the Charles, and great endeavors were made to attach her attention, but without avail. Information reached Westport of the accident, and the Grafton proceeded to her assistance, and after standing by her all night, towed the disabled vessel to Westport, arriving early this morning.
