WAIHI PLAINS

This district is one of the most promising in the upper Groldfield, the claims already taken up on the line of reef (which is very large.) extends over half a mile m length, and in every claim, prospects can be obtained by pounding the stone, the gold is very fine and requires careful treatment, but with the improved machinery, I have no doubt the whole of the ground now taken up will pay handsomely.

Pbo3pectoes'.—Nicholl and party, ten men's ground. They have had a trial parcel of one ton packed to the Owharoa, from which, as already reported, they obtained loz ldwt melted gold. They hare since put in a small drive under the same place to enable them to break out 50 loads, which will be crushed as soon as the County road is complete. Since the reef has been cut it has shown colors of gold pretty freely, and they anticipate getting from li to 2ozs to the ton.

Dulcebel.—This claim adjoins the Prospectors', and comprises 7 men's ground, and taken up by John Iftcks, Patten, aod party. They have this week finished a crushing of one .ton for the handsome return of , loz, melted gold. This was taken from the drive put in by J. McCombie, and is about 90 feet from the top of the hill, and about 200 feet from where the prospectors are getting their gold, and about 500 feet N.E. of the place where McOombie took his crushing which returned over |oz; thus showing that the monster carries payable gold at any rate for over 1000 feet. Other claims have been pegged out and licenses applied for by Messrs Bowe, Scanlan, and others, and the prospectors' have applied for water right, and intend to erect a small battery on their own account as soon ai possible. .
