HOKITIKA.

Thursday.

THE BOEING MACHINE

The boring machine which has been here some time is not suitable for drift or sediment. This is the cause of the failure at Kaneiri, where the County Council has been boring for coal in soil unsuitable to the machine. .Nothing but rocks suit the drill. If pebbly drift is mot with amongst ground or rock, the drill will pick it up. The machine, without boring rods, weighs 4<l tons. It has a 12 horse power locomotive boiler for wood or coal. It can bore a core of an inch and sewn eights f.o a depUi of 1500 feet. The County Council consider the price for boring charged by Government excessive. They are to give the machine another trial in quartz reefing country, at Taupo, before returning it. This will occupy a month or so.
