Yesterday.
The Australians continued their innings, and at tour o'clock all were disposed of for 171 runs, Slight being the highest scorer with 41; Jarvis, 34; Spofforth, 32; Alexander, 28. Welling, ton then commenced their second innings, and when time was called had scored 56 for a loss of 15 wickets. Blacklock played a pretty innings for 26. The Wellingtonians have now to make 33 runs to save a one tunings defeat. His Excellency visited the ground during the afternoon. This day. Mr H. Ballance broke his leg while training at Huntingdon.
The Wellington second innings closed for 68 this morning, thus losing the match by one innings and 21 runs. A scratch match will be played this afternoon.
A writ has been issued for the election of a member of the House of Representatives in a southern Maori electoral district, vice Tamui resigned. Bryce's resignation, and Rolleston's appointment as Native Minister is gazetted, also H. K. Taiaroa's resignation as Native Assessor.
