HOPEFUL.
The following is the mine manager's weekly report:—"The new level tunnel has been driren 17 feet daring the past week; the total distance for the fortnight is 35 feet. The country is still tight for working; the "hope" of mullock has run out, and the two portions of the reef hare junctioned. It is very small in size, averaging eight inches/ The stone has shown no gold, but contains good minerals. According to the plan, the cross-lode is not more that 15 feet from the present face. I was hopiwg to hare reached it by this time, but owing to the ground becoming tighter, and finding the tunnel will require a few sets of timber to be fixed in the same for personal safety, I do not expect to reach the junction till next week. No. 2 level: The drive on mineral vein is still going through hard sandstone country. The distance driven for the week is five feet, making total distance on same for the fortnight 11 feet. I broke down the leader in No. 1 rise, from which I obtained lOlbs of picked stone.— E. Howse."
