THE MINE.
The erection of the battery will be commenced in a few days, and from the high prestige enjoyed by the firm to whom the contract has been given— Messrs A. and G. Price, of the Thames— we have every confidence that the work will be executed in ■ a workmanlike manner. Apropos of this matter we would suggest to. the directors of the Battery Company the desirability of permitting those claims whose quartz has the best chance of giving a payable return to have the first use of the stampers. The advisability of this is obvious. If we want support from outside we must show how many payable claims we have, and not how many duffers. Lucky Hit.-—A lease having been applied for, the shareholders have suspended operations till after the battery is erected. They are chiefly Katikati and Tauranga men, and their presence is necessary at home for a few. weeks.
Morning Star. -Work was resumed iv this mine yesterday morning, after a few days cessation. Gold is still seen in the stone, and 15 or 20 tons of quartz are paddocked.
A new claim was pegged out on Tuesday on the Te Kawa ICawa Creek, as will be seen from the list of notices of pegging out. The shareholders' report having an auriferous leader in hand, and are in high hopes;
The native owners of the Goldtield Claim report another splendid prospect from the solid reef. They are not desirous of. selling, being quite satisfied that their lode is a payable one. Waikato.—A nice looking leader about three inches thick has come into the reef, and made a few colors of gold on the junction. The country is good sandstone, and every indication favors the idea of a good deposit of gold being not far distant.
The following notices of pegging out have been lodged : — Te BLirikiri. —Eight men's ground, 60 chains north east of United Claim ; W. J. C. Cogswell. Shotover. — Fifteen men's ground, situated about a mile and a half up the Te BLawakawa Creek; Henry Thomas Appleyard,"E. Griffiths, A. M. Wainwright, T. Potts, John Browning, B. McCabe, T. W. Gought, James B. Young, G. Barker, and John Uaynes.
