The drains from the Government Buildings flow into Kirkwood street, and there form an obnoxious pool. The result of this has been-that two fresh cases of fever have arisen. Mr John B. Mason, the Inspector of Nuisances, is endeavoring to check a spread of malaria from the same source by a plentiful supply of carbolic acid. It will be remembered that some few years ago the police charged a man named Griffiths with allowing, the drainwater from his stable to flow into the waiter table, and the unfortunate was fined £5. ISTow, the police, by their culpable negligence in permitting their drains to run on to the roadway, are creating a means whereby epidemics may be fostered *and developed. There are already two cases of fever, as we have stated, and without something is done to prevent the flow of obnoxious and pestilential liquids into the roadway, the place will soon become a hotbed of fever. Until some of the police or Government officials get a touch of the epidemic, we may expect that nothing will be done, but when that happens the Government officials will blame the Borough authorities for allowing such a disgraceful place to exist in their midst. Were anyone but the Government officers guilty of this malaria-spreading spot, there would be a caße for the Resident Magistrate immediately. But then, you know, Government officials are like kings—" they can do no wrong."
