PAEROA.

(FBOM OUR OTO COKBEBPONDBNT.)

This day, 1 p.m.

A number of persons have been out to see the reef on the Waihe Plains, and most have returned disappointed. It was a matter of surprise to miners at Owha* roa to hear of the new discovery, for, to the majority, the existence of the reef I was known, and months ago a trial from lit was crushed for a yield of Bdwts to the ton. For the information of your readers, I may briefly describe the locality. It is about seven miles from Owharoa, in a fern spur,

lying somewhat parallel; to the main; Waitekauri Spur. The quartz is seen cropping up on the surface, and is not of a very promising character. About sixty feet from where the stone crops out a drive has been put in, and in it the reef has been cut. The i'ootwall casing ia a black looking quartz similar to that found at Waitekauri, and usually carries gold, but the middle of the reef, a body of quartz five or six feet thick, is of chrystaUsed character, and very poor looking. Mr McCombie, of Shortland, prospected the place many months ago, but was not, satisfied with the results of his labor. A* claim has been marked out, but I hare not heard of any of this, being takea up. At Owaharoa, mining matters are looking up and there is every prospect of the district getting a. good prospecting./,
