The retrenchment policy of the Government cannot be said to hare produced any good result in the Thames district, especially in regard to the police arrangements of the district. There are at present only two men who take duty on the Thames, and they were totally insufficient for the requirements of the district. It is impossible that the wants of the district can be efficiently attended to with
such a small staff. There are numerous duties which have to be attended to by the police besides those that ordinarily demand their attention, and it is patent to everyone that in order to satisfactorily maintain the peace of the district an extra member of the police force is needed. The disgraceful scenes which are eventuating every night by young people are left to continue through the small staff of police on hand, and it is quite time an extra man or two were appointed to better ensure the preservation of the peace.
