THE Evening Star. PUBLISHED DAILY AT FOUR O'CLOCK P.M. Resurrexi. FRIDAY, JANUARY 14, 1881.

It is much to be regretted that the oath administered in the It.M. Courts is so frequently evaded and dishonored. Men when sworn to tell " the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth," do not, we fear, clearly recognise the grave promise they have made, and seem to be oblivious of the fact that they have sworn before God to tell the truth. Indeed, it has become such a matter of form—like kindred religious ceremonies—that hardly any one while giving evidence is as. particular as his conscience would urge him to be. The case of alleged sly grog-selling heard before the Itesident Magistrate this morning clearly proves that some gross perjury has been committed on one side or the other. As will be seen from the summing up of the E.M., seven witnesses swore that the information of Phillips in regard to their having imbibed was false, and either they have perjured themselves or the witness Phillips has sworn to a tissue of lies. The case is, however, settled now, and we trust that it will be long before such gross perjury will be, committed by people having sworn- to tell the truth, and who, presumably, have some little regard for their honour.
