THE Evening Star. PUBLISHED DAILY AT YOUR FOUR O'CLOCK P.M. Resurrexi. WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 12, 1881.

Now that the year 1881 has just commenced to rail its course, it would be well i? the Post Office Authorities at Wellington were to consider a question that has long been a subject of comment to business people. The postal arrangements for joining New Zealand with other countries are becoming every year more developed, and the mail boats between San Francisco and JSlew Zealand hare greatly decreased the time occupied ii the transit of mails between the two

places within the last twelve months. With such facilities for the despatch of correspondence, it is a wonder that the Postmaster-General does not take steps to place intercourse with Amerioa in regard to money orders, on the same footing as in the United Kingdom and other countries'. As matters stand at present, a person cannot transmit small amounts of money to America. Say, for example, anyone wishes to purchase a hook from a firm in New York, the cost of which is ten shillings. The amount is too small for a banker's draft, and the only way to obtain it is to do so through an agent in one of the principal cities in New Zealand—a proceeding which entails a considerable amount of extra expense, besides extra delay in transmission. People have again and again complained of this inconvenience, and we think steps should be taken so that people- wishing to obtain articles of small value from America, would have greater facilities for so doing, and if the Postmaster-General could see his way to make the desired arrangement, he would confer a: great boon on the public.
