CHRISTCHURCH.

This day. Death Sentence.

Wi Wharewa was sentenced to death to-day for the murder of his wife at Chatham Islands. He made a long and pointless statement when called upon by the Judge to say why he should not be sentenced, the burden of which was that they had tried to give him medicine in his food and his dislike of the doctor who attended him. He said nothing bearing on the murder, The jury at first wanted to recommend the .'prisoner to mercy on account 61 his wife's adultery, but the Judge said that uo evidence had been brought on the point, and they then returned a verdict of " Guilty." Walter Gibson was committed for trial today on a charge of murdering Kerisone at JPrebbleton, and will be tried on Thursday.
