The cricket match between the Australian Eleven and Combined New South Wales and Victoria was commenced yesterday. The Australians went in first, and scored 172 runs :—Murdoch, caught, 7; A Bannerman, c, 35 ; Groube, lbw, 6 ; McDonnell, b, 0; Slight, st, 12 ; Bonner, c, 53; Boyle, c, 6; Spofforth, not out, 24; Blackham, c, 5; Alexander, b, 3 ; Palmer, b, 10. The Combined Eleven went in, and when stumps were drawn for the day had put together 84 for 8 wickets : —Evans, b, 33 ; Massie, b, 12.
At to-day's champion meeting, the Midsummer Handicap was won by Odd Trick. It was a good race. In the Steeplechase, Himalaya beat Simpleton. This day. -" Arrived : Tararua, from the Bluff. Adelaide, This day. Bush Fires. Serious bush fires have occurred in country districts, attended by loss of life
and property. In one locality a woman with her five daughters and son have been burnt to death.
