At the sitting of the Assembly yesterday, the principal business was the discnssion of the address in reply to the Governor's speech. The address was moved by Mr W. H. Piggoth and seconded by Mr J. H. Douglas. Mr Farnell spoke next, after which Mr Buchanan moved an amendment by way of addition to the address affirming the principle of protection. The debate was continued by Brodnbb, Melville, Turner and Webb. Mr Buchanan's amendment was negatived, and the original motion was agreed to without a division in either case. NEWCASTLE. The announcement of a great rise in the price of coal in California created considerable excitement here. It is confidently believed that coal will be down below the Newcastle coal after the New Year, when extreme competition is expected.
