Parawai District School.

The annual distribution of prizes took place last evening to the successful boys in the school by Mrs, E. F. Tizard. E. F. Tizard, Esq.,, presided, and gave an excellent address on education, in the course of which he remarked that it was. sad to see that a. great number of boysundertook to control themselves when not able to doHH>,...and ••wr etfnsequence many of them; t»y contracting men's habits, such as smoking, made themselves , a nuisance and a pest to society, and h«£ imb/essed upon those present the! necessity that existed for parents to keep them in proper subjection. The children " then enlivened the audienoe ' with a number of selections, which were most satisfactorily rendered. Specially worthy of note was Bob Sawyer's Party from "Pickwick;" in which the characters were admirably sustained by the children. The palm must undoubtedly be awarded to a little girl named Penk, whose conception of the irate land lady was excellent. She appears to have in her the makings of a good actress, and she would no doubt be an ornament to the stage with care and study. F. Strange recited the Poet Laureate's " Balaclava Charge " and acquitted himself admirably. After the delivery of the prizes a number of cakes and other coveted child's' delights were handed round to the children. The Bchool has admirably progressed under the careful guidance of Mr Johi stone and his staff of teachers and the attendance is now upwards of 80.
