Thames Borough Council.

I The ordinary fortnightly meeting of the | above Council was held last evening in the Borough Council Chambers. His Worship the Mayor (Wm. Wilkinson, Esq.) presided, and there were also present —Crs Mennie, McGowan, Marshall, Wilson, and Speight. The minutes of the last ordinary and special meetings were read and confirmed. TEE MBBABY. The Colonial Secretary wrote in answer to the request of the Council that their gift of books to the Thames Library should be equal to the gift to the Auckland one from the Colonial Library. He stated that the Government would not be able to give the library any more books than those already sent. Cr Speight said he would suggest making a selection of books, and then ask the Government for them. He would make out the list. BEGIBTBA.TION OF DOGS. .. A letter was read from the Colonial Secretary's office, stating that the wishes of the Council in regard to the registration of dogs would be attended to, and that the Governor will be advised to suspend the operation of the " Dog Registration Act" in the Borough of Thames until the 30th June next, but that unless an application is made from the County no action will be taken with regard to it. His Worship: What would be the loss to the Borough. Cr Speight: Three months' revenue, but that is better than if the public were unfairly dealt with.—Letter received. The letter re Mrs Syvrett's child, praying that it might be admitted into, the school for the deaf and dumb was, on the motion of Cr McGowan, referred to the Charitable Aid Committee.

PABAWAI. The petition of the Town Clerk and others, praying for annexation to the Borough of the Parawai Highway District, j and the making of it a separate ward was received. ; J WATER SUPPLY COMMITTEE. This report was received and adopted on the motion of Gr McGowan seconded by Cr Marshall. The report showed that the section of the 9-inch main from Farawai to Shortland Police Station had been laid, and the pipes tested to a pressure of 1601bs. FOBEMAN OF WOBKB' BBPOBT. ; The annual report of the Foreman of Works, as printed in our issue of yesterday,' was received and adopted. THE POSITION OF THK BOBOUGH. Cr McGowan said that he considered the present an opportune time for some definite arrangements to be made with the Bank. This was the commencement of another year, and as there were several works to be carried out, it would be as well to ascertain from the Bank to what extent the Borough could overdraw, so that th^y could ensure being able to pay for the work done. He did not like the Borough to be in the hands of anyone— Cr Mennie: " The Town Clerk, for instance."—and thought they should in* terview the Bank.—The matter was referred to the Finance Committeee. , COMMUNICATION WITH TE AKOHA. His Worship said that a company had been formed for the purpose of building a boat to ply between Kopu and the Aroha, and it would be necessary to form a tramway to Kepu. wharf. However he had been informed that it was not at all improbable that the Government would form the railway from here to Kopu, and he thought they should appoint someone to confer with the County on the matter in order if possible to secure the completion of the work. The Hon. Mr Hall was now carrying out the work of Mr Oliver, the Minister of Public Works, and that gentleman was, he thought, more favorably disposed towards the district than,Mr Oliver.

Cr Speight said that he had lately seen a letter in the papers in which Mr Oliver had refused point blank to do the work. His Worship said that a later communfcation had been made to the Government, and one of the Engineers-in-charge had drawn up specifications and estimate of costs.

Ultimately it was decided that His Worship, Cr Speight, and the Town Clerk should form a subcommittee to confer with the County Council, and with that body tike such action as might be necessary to forward the formation of the line. DANGEROUS CUTTING. Cr McGowan pointed out to the Council 1 that the cutting in the Waiotabi Creek ! was in a dangerous condition, and that something should be done to make it safer, or the Council nrght expect to have a claim for compensation laid before them by Mr Lewis, whose property was endangered by the unsafe state of the cutting. The matter was referred to the Works Committee to report.

The Council then adjourned.
