Thamos Borough Council.
INSTALLATION OF MAYOR.
A special meeting of the Borough Council was held this morning in the Council Chambers for the purpose of installing William Wilkinson, Esq., as Mayor of the Borough. Mr Wilkinson presided, and there were also present Crs McGowan, Speight, Marshall, Bawden, and Wilson.
After the declaration,
Cr McGowan said that he was surprised to see that the late'Mayor was not preient to give an account of his dsings during the last twelve months, and he coniidered it a breach of etiquette on his part not to hare done so. His Worship reriewed the position of the Borough at some length, and said that the people of the Borough ought to feel thankful to the Councillors and Mayor who had done so much towards improving the condition of the town. During the late Mayor's term of office it had been necessary to curtail expenses, and in con-, sequence some of the roads and footpaths needed metalling. As the gold duty had been substituted for rates on mining property it would be necessary to devise aome means of making the amount up, as the revenue from the gold:duty was rapidly decreasing. During, the past term the Council had not seett their way to spend much money on the Big Pump, but they would be only too pleased to do so if they could see sufficient inducement. The Council had always done their best for the Borough, and he was sure, for his part, that they would continue to do so. fee thought that the late Mayor did not know of the rule quoted by Cr McGowan, but had he have known he would undoubtedly have been present, or would have sent an apology. However he supposed the Council must excuse him ai no doubt he was detained by his business. He moved, " That the thanks of the Council be tendered to Mr Ehrenfned for the ability displayed by him while occupying the Mayoral chair of the Borough." . , . ■, Cr Speight seconded the resolution, and considered that no Mayor either before or after Mr Ehrenfred, could display so much interest and devote so much time to business as he had done. The remarks of Cr McGowan and the Chairman were entirely out of place, and any censure on the late Mayor was not needed, as it was unnecessary for the ex-Mayor to be present at the induction of the Mayor-elect. His Worship said he stood corrected. He then asked the Councillors to drink the health of the Borough, and the Council dispersed.
