Ten days before the presidential election an unpopular forged letter with Garfield's signature appeared in a New York paper which lost the votes of three States to the republicans. In Minnosota, the State Insane Asylum was burnt. Between -twenty and fifty inmates were burnt to death.

Forty-four miners were killed in a coal mine at Shellerton, Nova Scotia.
