In Great Britain, they are "forced to be careful of their timber, and for as many trees cut down young ones are planted, and in consequence the inhabitants of the British Isles need never fear a wood famine, as, independent of foreign supply there are sufficient growing forests to supply Great Britain for an age; and the laws have become so strict in that respect that no trees are allowed to be cnt from any forest without new ones are planted in their stead. They value the idea of keeping a stock in reserve, but how do we stand in this respect? Hundreds of miles of bush are yearly cut or burned down, and no provision is made for the future. No new trees are planted, and our timber supply is rapidly becoming less. Not that there is not plenty of timber, and there no doubt will be for years to come, but that we are burning oar forests without providing any for use in the distant future. Nature has endowed New Zealand, especially the North Island, with timber in abundance, but we must not entertain the idea that that fruitful, Mistress can supply timber as fast as we can. use it. We have been using the forests without any attempt being made to provide timber for the use of the next generation, and we would suggest the advisability of making arrangements for planting young trees, so that in future years we shall not rue -the extravagance in the use of timber which is a blot on the economy of the present generation.
