We would remind our reader* of the performance of Spohr's grand oratorio, " The Last Judgment," which is to take place in St. George's Church this evening. Spohr's musical description of the last day is well known to be grand and awe-inspiring, and we hare no doubt, that ample justice will be accorded it by the St George's choir, who have taken great pains to, qualify themselves for the successful interpretation of this grand work of the great German composer and eminent violinist. All true lovers of sacred music should attend the performance, this evening.

Mb John* Tyebman, who was widely known os the champion of freethought and spiritualism, died at Darlirighnrst, Sydney, on Nov. 27th. Originally a member of the Wesleyan Church, the deceased gentleman was ordained a minister of that persuasion in New Zealand some 16 or 17 years ago j but removing to Victoria subsequently he entered the Church of England and was licensed to preach by t°e l*te Bishop Perry. In 1871 the question of spiritualism engaged puplic attention, and Mr Tver man was-requested by his parishioners to deliver a sermon against the growing influence of the new teachings. Instead, however, of being ia opposition to spiritism, the address inclined the other way, and influence being brought, to bear upon his biahpp, Mr Tyerman's license was cancelled and he thereupon took up a prominent position on the new platform. It will be remembered that Mr Tyerman delivered several lectures on the Thames a short time ago on Spiritualism and Freethought.

Economy is a good thing, but when carried to excess, it may. be more costly than a judicious liberality. The Government, finding— it may be presumed—that the general public does not read that wonderful literary produotion, tbe New Zealand Government Gazette, have caused a number of slips containing a few particulars about some Goyernment lands to be sold next month to be posted in various places. If a few pounds had been spent in advertising the sales in the publip press it would have effectually prevented land jobbing, and tbe extra price obtained for the land would more than have repaid the cost. As it is, few will know when the sales take place, and the prioe will therefore be much below what it otherwise would be.
