DUNEDIN.

This day. Groat Fire. One of the moat disastrous fires that erer occurred in Dunedin broke out about four on Sunday morning in a large wooden building on the reclaimed land, used as an engine and tramway shed by Mr David Proudfoot. It is riot known how the fire originated. Seven men were on the premises at the time, engaged in cleaning an engine, but so quickly did the flames spread that they had barely time to escape. The building has been completely destroyed, also thirty-three tram cars, seren engines, and a great quantity of oats. The insurances were:—New Zealand, £2,000; Victoria, £1,500; Standard, £500; Norwich Union, £1,000; London and Lancashire, £1,000; Trans* atlantic, £1,000; Australian Alliance, £500; National, £1,000; Hamburg, £1,000; total, £12,000. It is almost certain that the cause of the fire is incendiarism. The amounts abore named were obtained from the insurance agnnts, but Mr Proudfoot says he is insured for £14,000. He estimates his loss at £7,000 above this, without reckoning the loss which must ensue from the suspension of traffic. Only three cars are loft. A cable message will be sent to America to-morrow for others. More are on the way here, and every effort will be made to keep up the traffic. ■ •■
