The usual fortnightly meeting of fhis body was held at the Council Chambers last evening. The request was refused.—From the Colonial Secretary, acknowledging the receipt of the account books of the Thames Orphanage, and stating that the voucher for £105 13s 4d would be passed for payment direct to the claimants. This gave rise to a long discussion, as the Council had discharged these debts, and would have some difficulty in re-collecting them. It was resolved to acquaint the Government of the awkward position in which that course would place the Council.—From Mr J. B. Mason, Secre* tary to the Orphanage, asking the Council to erect the sub-dividing fences in the Orphanage grounds, as it was impossible to keep cattle out. ■ Beferred to Orphanage Committee with power to act.

A letter was read from Mr Hisloprethe case of Mrs Syvrett's child, staling that he would lay the Council's letter before ,Mr Bolleston, and would consult the master of the institution. He also stated that no new pupils would be taken in before February next, when he would write to the Council;— Resolved that the matter bUheft with the Town Clerk. LIBBABY BEPOBT. The report of the Library Committee was read and recommended that tiht Council purchase a few yards of mattilf to prevent people passing into the library disturbing visitors in the reading-room.— The report was received and adopted. HEALTH AICD BELIJVIHG OFPICBBS' BEPOBTS. The report of the Believing Officer was read and received, and also one from the Health Officer. . . WOBKS COMMITTEES BBPOBT. The report of Works Committee wai read, and recommended that the asphalt be relaid in front of Mr Townsend's ihop. The report was adopted. Water supply commutes. The report of the Committee showed that the reservoir road had been visited, and was in want of repair. It reconv mended that the Council pay the £10 promised by them towards the improvement of the road. The report snowed that the Turncock had up to 2001b«. 450 9-inch mains, of which number 56 had not stood the pressure.—After some discus* sion it was resolved that the Council pay the £10 on condition that the Parawai Board carry out the work satisfactorily. CHABITABLB AID. The Believing Officer's report showed that 39 names were now on the relief lift, and an expenditure of £38 4s 6d had been incurred in the month. The Finance Committee recommended the payment of accounts amounting to £302 15s 9d, which was agreed to. TUBirCOCK's IXPOBT. In his report, the turncock asked that he might leave off testing the pipes for s few days. . ' , , ■ .
