School Examinations.
The annual examination of the scholars attending the St. Joseph's school took place this morning. The children assembled in the schoolroom were very gaily dressed, and presented a very pretty spectacle. There were a good number of parents and friends present, and the liveliest interest was manifested in the proceedings. In consequence of the indisposition of His Grace Archbishop Steins he was unable to attend the examinations. He greatly regretted being unable to attend, but his medical adviser peremptorily forbade the voyage by sea. The Bey. Father Fjnes, Vicar General, represented His Grace, and the worthy Pastor of the district, tbe Bey. Father O'Beilly, was also present. The Lady Superior of the St. Mary's Convent; Auckland, and other Sisters were also present. The proceedings commenced by an examination of the infant school, and the following programme was effectively carried o»t it-
infant school. Hymn—"Dear Angel ever at thy side." , Address—Julia Gleeson. 2nd Class—Beading, Spelling, and Tables. Song—" Grandfather's Clock." Ist Class—Beading, Spelling, Tables, and Scripture History. Song—" The IS eat Little Clock." Becitation—l. " The Adopted Child;" 2. " My First New Doll;" 3. "The Treasures of tbe Deep." s». Joseph's school. Song—" Sweet Byand-Bye." Catechism. 4th Class—Beading, Spelling, and Arithmetic. 3rd Class—History, Grammar; Becitation, "Mother, Home and Heaven," L. Scanlan. Song.
2nd and Ist Class—Geography, Rules for Spelling, History. The following is the list of prizewinners:—Michael Mulligan, Conduct; George Moore, Reading and Writing; Annie Ryan, Mary Ann O'Brien, Kate McCurdy, Arithmetic; Nelly Spinks, Attendance; Mary McCarran, General Improvement; Norah Kowan t Frank Claxton, Reading and Recitation ; Norah Scandlin, Mary Quadri, George Douglas, Eliza Pierce, Spelling; Dolly Sullivan. 2nd Class—Martin Whatea, Kate Swift, 'Neatness; Ellen Tooher, General Improvement; Sarah Mean, Recitation; Clara Mean, Tables; Maggy O'Brian, Mary K. Twohill, Mary Foy, Reading; Ellen Solon, Julia Moore, Hugh Mcllhone.
Upwards of 80 children were examined.
