It has been decided that the proposed Trans-Saharan Eailway shall be preceded by the construction of a telegraph line connecting Algiers with St. Louis in Senegal, via Timbuctoo. Bishop Herzog, according to a Geneva correspondent, haa left Switzerland for the United States with the object of promoting a scheme for the federation of all the Christian churches in the universe. Telephone experiments with the new apparatus by Dr Herz have been made with the French Atlantic cable between Brest and Penzance, and are said to have yielded satisfactry results.
