Mayoral Election.
DECLARATION OP THE POLL
Towards six o'clock the crowd round the polling booth was very large, although there appeared to be but little interest taken in the result by any, with the exception of the candidates and their immediate supporters. Brassey's supporters were very confident, especially when two or three large cab loads of supporters rolled up within a few minutes before the declaration of the poll. Wilkinson's committee, however, had been doing a large amount of steady work, and were ! equally satisfied of the success of their man. At six precisely the door closed, and in about 40 minutes the Returning Officer came to the door and announced the result as follows :— Wilkinson 326 Brassey 252 Majority for Wilkinson ... 74, Loud cheers were given by the supporters of the successful candidate, and groans by the disappointed, supporters of Mr Brassey. Mr Wilkinson having gone to Shortland to make preparations for proceeding to Te Aroha, Dr Eilpour returned thanks on his behalf.
