THE Evening Star. PUBLISED DAILY AT FOUR O'CLOCK P.M. Resurre xi. WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 24, 1880.
In a late issue we referred to the bad state of the road through the Komata. The fact of this piece of road being impassible for Tehicles alone prevents direct communication by coach or carriage with Te Aroha. How much longer are we to wait the convenience or the pleasure of old Tukukino ? Is the Government of the country powerless to carry a line of road through three or four miles of native territory ? A reply to these questions is urgently required. The convenience of the public requires the construction of this road, and such a demand should be met at once. In the past this community has suffered considerable loss by the Komata section being allowed to remain unfinished, but circumstances now require its instant formation. To further such an object, the local authorities should call a public meeting and pass such resolutions as would show the Government the great necessity there exists for the construction of this line of road, and to urge the instant removal of Tukukino and his party of obstructionists. If the Government cannot do this by moral persuasion, well, forcible means should be resorted to. There is no danger of a native difficulty, the sole obstructionist is Tukukino, and he has not even the support of his hapu. We trust that our suggestion will be accepted, and immediate steps taken in this matter, which is of so much importance to this community.
