DEATH OF A GOVEBNMBNT SUPPOBTEB.
Mr Richmond, one of the late members fora constituency in the provincial district of Nelson, has died very suddenly. The Speaker, Sir George Maurice O'Rorke has been notified of the melancholy event, aud a writ for his successor will be issued in the ordinary course. The Riohmonds may not ha?e it all their own way when the vacancy comes to be filled up. In politics the late member was a very strong supporter of the. continuous Ministry. The election for the vacancy I learn will be fixed for the middle of next month, so that the new representative will be able to take his seat in case of our new Governor calling Par* liament together.
PATBTEBB PUBLIC MEETING. Arrangements are in progress for call* ing a public meeting in.Auckland to deal with the policy of the Government re the Patetere lands. Mr Dargaville and other influential citizens have taken the matter warmly up, and its decision will J strengthen thte hands of your senior member (Sir George Grey) when presenting your memorial and dealing with the several important matters connected with this much-talked transaction. The result of the Thames meeting was largely and favorably spoken of here. In the facaof the stormy opposition raised against the removal of the proclamation from these blocks of land from all parts of the colony, I have still a belief that the Ministry will have discovered their error, and leave the matter (as was generally understood) to be dealt with by the House when it meets. ,
