Last evening the Academy was crowded with persons eager to see the beauties of the Flower Show, bat so great was the press that locomotion in the building waa almost impossible. The fine band of the Hauraki Engineers was present, and played selections at intervals daring the evening. Mr James McGowan, who presided, delivered a short address detailing the good done by the Society, but owing to the noise in the hall it was impossible to catch more than a word here and them. Mr G. N. Phillips read the report and balance sheet as follows :— In bringing under joar notioe the proceed* ings of the pact year, the Committee have a gain to thank 70a for yonr cordial support. 7 " The number of families relieved daring the year haa been 46, at an expenditure of £181 10* 4d, which is £59 18* lOd more than that of the previous year. Twenty-two of these families tre still 011 the books. If gives the Committee pleasure to report that though only £6119 i6d have been received as subsidy from the Government, and though no house to house canvass has been retorted to thisyear it bat, nevertheless, allowed bo really deserving case brought under ita notioe to pass unassisted. Tbe number of names remaining on tbe Society's books from year to year v ■ increasing, and while the Committee does not , decline to help the necessitous, it cannot but regret tbe social condition indicated by, sues, a state of things. In oonelusion the Com* mittee would express the hope, seeing the vast amount of good which has been done at a small expense, and teeing to many are sow ' requiring help, that the generous publio will continue cordirlly to support tbw Inttita* - a tion.Balahcx Shbbt.—Baoeiptt and expenditure from 18th Nov., 1879, to 16th Nov., 1880 :*- Te balance £64 2s 6d; crsh in treasurer's / bands, £8 17s; gross proceeds flower show. 1879, £4814s i Government subsidy ft>year ending 31it December, 1879, £44 14s 6d| Government subsidy half-year ending 80th June, £7 15s; Bnsor fund, £81 19s lid; orphanage, Pinafore concert, £6 4s; aubscrip* tions for Mrs Bioharda, collected by Mr H.
