The supposed Suicide at Taranu.

The Advertiser this morning publishes a story of a man being drowned near the old wharf at Tarara at a late hoar last evening. It States that a man named Millett came into town and gave the following information to Constable Me* Manas. Millett's attention was attracted towards some cows which wer« giviing on the flat,'as he observed a man standing •lose by them. Thinking that the men meant to do the animals soma mischief, Millett proceeded to the spot where he wns standing, bat before he reached him the man ran away. Millett gave chase, and succeeded in getting within twenty yards of the fugitive when he turned , round and threatened to stab Mm if he came nearer, baring apparently a knife in ! his hand. ,Mr Gbdkin.now appeared, and also gave chase. After s long nut, Mr Godkin threatened to shoot tike man if he didn't stop, 1 bat the latter took no notice 6f the threat, and .apparently ran headlong into the tide.' Mr Darrow and others who heard of the occurrence speedily launched a boat, and looked round for more than an hour with* out success, all being impressed that the fugitive was a lunatio, and had drowned , himself. Sneh is the gist of the state*, ment supplied to the police. The police | have been busy making enquiries to-day and from what we can learn a different face is pat on the occurrence. It appears that the man when observed was guilty of a very gross crime, and when pursued evaded those hunting for him by running round Tararu point. The police are acquainted with his whereabouts, and it is probable that he will appear before the A.M. to-morrow.
