Cricket.

The cricket match announced for Saturday did not take place, owing to the absence of a number of the players, and it was decided to play a scratch match. Sides were chosen by Messrs Frater and Buttle, after an excellent wicket had been prepared. The game proved an interesting one, and gave the players a good afternoon's practice. The ground was in better condition than it had previously been this season, and was very lively, giving the field a considerable amount of leather hunting. In this department of the game the players were sadly deficient, and if the 'dub desire to hold their own m matches with outside clubs during the coming season, the members must pay more attention to fielding. To make cricket enjoyable, it is not only necessary that there should be good bowling and batting, but the fielding ought also to be good. The following are the scores :— Buttle, b Turner, 8; Lawless, b McLean, 26; Jeffrey, b Turner, 0; Harrison, b Webber, 14; Spencer, b Turner, 13; Andrews, b Burgess, 3; Nodder, b Edmonds, not but, 0; extras, 54.—Total, 111.

Frater, b Lawless, 0; Burgess, b Spencer, 7; Turner, b Spencer, 2; Poulgrain, not out, 14; Kotheram, b Spencer, 4; Hawley, b Spencer, 2; McLean, b Spencer, 9; Webber, b Lawless, 4; Newton, b Lawless, 0; extras, 21.—Total, 63.
