It is gratifying to find the AttorneyGeneral speaking so strongly in deprecation of the idea of repudiation, and confidently of the future of the colony. At the banquet gi?en in Auckland last night by the representatives of Me Arthur and j Co., in honor of the installation of the j head of the firm as Lord Mayor of London, Mr Whitaker, in replying to the toast of the Ministry, is reported to have spoken as stated above. We deprecated the remarks, as uncalled for and not warranted by the circumstances, made by Mr Sounders in his uddieii to his Cheviot; constituent!!, when he said he feared the colony would yet have to repudiate its debts." The Press Tery generally throughout Now Zealand have condemned Mr Saundeva, and pointed oat, the absurdity of his statements, and now the opinions of the Attorney-General, together with those of the Press, will go iM^tp^U^a^^j^c^^l^l-^^ member of Parliament id ay have raised in .the minds of .residents in the colony^br of persons at a distance. Mr Whitaker may well be considered an authority, for he has been a resident of New Zealand for forty years, and has witnessed it recover from many worse situations than its present one. He wisely says retrenchment, and no.more borrowing, will have to be the order of the day for some time, and such advice will commend itself to'all who wish to see this land prosper, and its fair fame maintained as one of the brightest jewels in the Crown of the "British Empire.
