WELLINGTON.
This day.
A narrow escape from a very serious accident occurred on the Wellington and Mastertoa railway yesterday afternoon. The down train from Masterton had reached to near the summit of liimataku, when it came in collision with a tree which had fallen across the .line. The leading truck of the train, containing two horses/ had the tore part of it smashed. This track, along with the next carriage, which was occupied by passengers, was thrown oft' the line. Some excitement was caused among' the passengers, but no damage was douc. The obstruction was cleared without delay, and the train arrived safe in town. Some workmen passed the spot a few minutes before,
when the line was clear, thus showing the tree mast have fallen immediately before the approach of the train.
